2019 Season Preview
The Falcons graduated four starting offensive lineman and an experienced quarterback, Willie Taylor, from the 2018 squad. Looking to fill the signal caller's shoes are a pair of capable rising Juniors, Evan Ashworth and Andrew Wegerski. Both played quarterback on JV over the past two years and both players have unique skill sets that will compliment each other.
Replacing the offensive line will be no small task. The Falcon 2018 offensive line had considerable experience and were one of the largest offensive lines in the area. This year's trench warriors are much smaller and not as experienced. However, they are very aggressive, very quick and are fast to learn. Their off-season work will be critical to their development this year.
The defense returns five starters and two players that saw considerable playing time last year. This year's defense has speed to burn. The entire defensive unit can fly. If there is a question mark on defense it is up front. A lot like our offensive line this year, they are young and undersized but are very aggressive and quick.
The Falcons open the season with a long road trip to Ashbrook in Gastonia. Ashbrook will be a good early test in discipline for Green Hope as Ashbrook employs a Navy style triple option attack on offense. Also new to the schedule this year is Triton High School and Durham Hillside. With Durham Hillside being a new addition to the conference, the conference looks to be even stronger this year.
Also new in 2019 are additions to the coaching staff. Joe Kilby, our offensive line coach, took a coordinator position at conference foe Athens Drive. Replacing Coach Kilby will be Michael James who has a bevy of top notch coaching experience working under longtime offensive line guru Paul Hoggard at Richmond and Holmes. James also earned a state championship ring while coaching at Crest High School.
Another addition to the 2019 staff is Ty Norwood. Ty is a coaches son. His father is a North Carolina legend who retired from Ragsdale High School and is currently coaching in South Carolina. Ty came to us with experience as an offensive coordinator at Southern Guilford and will coach receivers at Green Hope.
Adding to the depth of coaching on Green Hope's staff this year is Harrison Gee. Coach Gee comes to us after his playing days at NC State have ended. Coach Gee will be coaching our tight ends this year.
Brandon Turner also joined the Green Hope Varsity football staff coming from new conference adversary, Hillside. Coach Turner now coaches corners for the Falcons. Coach Turner brought another coach to us, Andre Starks. Coach Starks brings considerable toughness and technique to our defensive line having played in NFL Europe.
There is an abundance of enthusiasm going into the 2019 campaign. The many new faces on Varsity brings challenges and excitement, which are the reasons we play football!
